Years ago, you would send a package or receive one and you would have to take your chances that it would actually show up when expected. There was no way to tell where the package was or have an estimate of when it was coming. Over the past few years, a new technology was invented that allowed courier services and postal services to track your package to its location anywhere in the world. It has been a boon for package services that can now use the internet and tracking numbers to tell both sender and receiver where the package is and where it is expected to be in the coming days, including when it is expected to arrive.

How it works is simple. A package sent from a company is given a tracking number and a bar code. It is entered into the system at the factory or company from which it is sent. The receiver can, when looking up the tracking number on the internet, find out when the package is leaving (or has left) the senders dispatch. This gives the receiver an idea of when to expect the package.

The receiver can then track the package throughout its course. Each time the package changes hands along the way, the bar code is scanned into a computer and sent to the internet for the receiver to have a chance of finding out where their package is located. (Keep in mind that a package may change hands several times along the way.) Eventually, an expected arrival date will become clear and will be listed on the internet.

The receiver can also call the courier, give them the tracking number and have them get the location and expected arrival date of the package. They have that information on their computers if the person does not have a computer or access to the Internet. They may be able to track a package without the tracking number if one has other identifying information about the package, such as the sender and receiver of the package. (It is far better, however, to keep track of the tracking number you receive when you order the package.)

That way, if the package does not arrive at the expected time, you can call the company (or chat with them online) to see where the package might be. They can track the package for you and can give you the location of the package. They can then begin the search for the package at the last known location.

Packages are coming faster than ever and fewer packages are getting lost. This is due to competition between various shipping companies and the postal service to get your shipping dollars by being fast and prompt in delivery of the items. Certainly, there can be weather delays or other delays that can happen but at least you’ll be able to track the package throughout its course.
